Tarbiyah based Parenting

Abdullah is 2.5 years old ma sha Allah, and honestly, we’re still figuring out this parenting thing. Subhan Allah. We’re trying to homeschool him in sha Allah, mostly inspired by ERDC.

What’s worked so far: we introduced books to him very, very early even at 6 months and ma sha Allah, now he’s all about books. Nothing else.

The other thing is we never kept a TV at home. That forced us to find real ways to keep him occupied, and honestly it was as much an unlearning experience for us as parents as it was for him. What I’ve realised is that it’s the child’s fitrah to get busy with whatever is available around him. We don’t need to entertain a child all the time we just need to keep them involved.

Take cooking, cleaning, anything he does all of it with his mother ma sha Allah. And to my surprise, he’ll now tell you the name of every masala in the kitchen :p

I’m also trying my best to keep him socially active since he isn’t going to school. He goes on play dates with other kids in the society, and we make sure he gets at least an hour or two at the park, playing outdoors. Alhamdulillah, that way he’s made many friends.

It’s already been a journey. We’ve made mistakes, tried to fix them, and moved on.

In sha Allah, may Allah swt grant us the hidayat to do his tarbiyah better. We never want him caught up in this rat race we want him to have his own individuality and grow in the way Allah swt wants from him. May Allah swt grant him and us hidayat and keep us on the right path. Ameen ya Rabb.
